Narrative
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the most secret and ancient events in the world, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Many of the actions that Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals take during the conclave process in the film are faithful to the Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. The Vatican officially declares the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) vacant. The papal apartment is closed with a scarlet ribbon and sealed with the papal wax seal. The College of Cardinals is sequestered in apartments (known as the Domus Sanctae Marthae or House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes.

And now… a film for adults.Based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris, CONCLAVE takes viewers inside the Vatican during the College of Cardinals’ process of electing a new pope…filled with political infighting, plot twists, twists and turns, and plenty of surprises.And…if the average age of the audience in the theater where I saw it is any indication…the “adults” flocked to see this film.Directed by Edward Berger (ALL HAPPENING IN THE WEST), CONCLAVE moves along at a brisk pace, unraveling the mystery – not of “who did it” but rather of “who’s going to get it” – and it gets surprisingly tense. Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the HARRY POTTER films) is the lynchpin of the action as the “Dean” of Cardinals, tasked with leading a disparate group of Cardinals to unanimously elect the next Pope. He acts as both Detective and Facilitator, battling his own religious conscience…and ambition…while uncovering the plans and schemes of some of the “lowly servants” vying for the top job. He is ably assisted by John Lithgow, Isabella Rosellini and a host of others (mostly unknowns) who are vying for “pole position” in the race to become the next Pope.

Special mention must be made to the GREAT Stanley Tucci for his supporting role as one of the candidates whose platform seems to be “I don’t want this” but who, deep down, really, really wants it. Don’t be surprised if both Fiennes and Tucci (and director Berger) are mentioned in the Oscar nominations (they’re that good). As mentioned above, this movie has a ton of twists and turns and it’s fun to ride them, but to be honest, I felt like this movie went “one twist too far” and should/could have ended 10 minutes before the end (minus the final twist). Now, some would say that this final twist is the crux of the movie, but… it would be fine if it wasn’t for that point.
