Challenges to US-Turkey Cooperation on Syria

12:00pm – 1:15pm

Since President Trump’s decision in December 2018 to withdraw from Syria, the U.S. and Turkey have been working to find a formula that addresses Turkey’s security concerns while ensuring no power vacuum is created in northern Syria. Conversations about creating a safe zone have been underway and some progress appears to have been made. At the same time, there continues to be a lot of uncertainty about the future of the US support for Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is dominated by the PKK’s Syrian branch, the YPG. The broader political future of the Syrian conflict continues to remain a major challenge for both countries as various diplomatic tracks have not produced a resolution to the conflict.

Please join the SETA Foundation at Washington D.C. for a timely conversation on the risks and opportunities faced by US-Turkey cooperation in Syria.

Speakers:

Rich Outzen, Senior Advisor for Syrian Engagement, The State Department

Burhanettin Duran, General Coordinator, The SETA Foundation

Moderator:

Kilic B. Kanat, Research Director, The SETA Foundation at Washington D.C.
