Event Summary: Charting the Way Forward: Humanitarian Crises and Instability in the Middle East

On July 15, SETA D.C. organized a panel discussion titled “Charting the Way Forward: Humanitarian Crises and Instability in the Middle East.” Moderated by Robert Baines, President of NATO Association of Canada in Toronto, the event took place on the 3rd anniversary of the July 15 coup attempt in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Military Institute and NATO Association of Canada. The event was supported by the Presidency of The Republic of Turkey Directorate of Communications.

Panelists included Prof. Emine Nur Günay, member of Turkish Parliament; Associate Prof. Talha Köse, Chair Political Science and International Relations of Ibn Haldun University, and Dr. Kadir Ustun, Executive Director of SETA D.C. After commemorating the July 15 coup attempt, Ms. Günay made a speech on the “Transformation of Turkey’s Strategy on the Middle East: Challenges of Terror and Migration.” She explained the proactive policy of Turkey in the Middle East and Operations of Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch. She also mentioned the refugee influx from Syria to Turkey and its outcomes. After her speech, Ms. Günay answered questions from the audience.

Dr. Ustun delivered his remarks on the legacy of the July 15 coup attempt on U.S.-Turkey relations. Dr. Kose focused on the ideological roots and organization of the FETO terror group.
