After years of regional confrontation with Israel and failed diplomatic engagement with the U.S., Iran finds itself at war with the U.S. and Israel. While the 12-day war of last June tested Iran’s deterrence capacity, the regime now faces what many see as an existential threat amid direct American and Israeli attacks. Even as Washington pursued negotiations, it deployed unprecedented military assets to the region promising major escalation. As diplomacy gave way to military conflict, the early targeting of the Supreme Leader Khamenei reshaped the strategic landscape. With the interim leadership trying to govern a state under siege, its targeting of U.S. assets in neighboring Gulf countries is likely to reconfigure the regional balance of power. Key questions now center on the regime’s durability, the costs Iran can exact on the U.S. and Israel as well as Washington’s definition of success. Whether the war ends through a political settlement or sheer attrition may shape not only its outcome but the regional order.
The SETA Foundation at Washington D.C. is pleased to host a timely panel discussion examining how this conflict reached its current phase, what is unfolding now, and what the endgame may look like for Iran, the United States, Israel, and the broader Middle East.
