Türkiye-U.S. Relations on the Eve of the Centennial | New York
On September 21, the Turkish Directorate of Communications organized the “Türkiye-U.S. Relations on the Eve of the Centennial” panel in New York City on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The event brought together senior Turkish and American officials, diplomats, and experts to discuss the evolution and future of Türkiye-U.S. relations as the two countries approach the centennial of diplomatic ties.
Türkiye’s Head of Communications Prof. Burhanettin Duran and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan delivered opening remarks, reflecting on the current state of bilateral relations, emerging regional and global challenges, and opportunities for strengthening cooperation between Türkiye and the United States.
Our Research Director Kılıç Buğra Kanat moderated a one-on-one session with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, focusing on Türkiye’s foreign policy priorities, regional developments, and the future trajectory of Türkiye-U.S. relations.
The subsequent panel discussion was moderated by our Executive Director Kadir Ustun and featured Presidential Chief Advisor on Foreign Policy and Security Akif Çağatay Kılıç; Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Security and Foreign Policy Council Prof. Çağrı Erhan; former U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza; and former U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye James Jeffrey.
The panel examined the historical foundations and strategic transformation of Türkiye-U.S. relations, Türkiye’s growing regional role, NATO and transatlantic security cooperation, and the implications of a rapidly changing international environment for the bilateral relationship. Speakers also discussed the importance of adapting longstanding frameworks of cooperation to address emerging geopolitical and security challenges.
The event concluded with a photo exhibition commemorating 100 years of Türkiye-U.S. diplomatic relations. The exhibition highlighted major high-level engagements and milestones in the bilateral relationship over the past century, offering a visual reflection on the evolution of ties between the two countries.
